Separation Anxiety in dogs can be a distressing psychological condition whereby dogs become anxious and panicked at being left.
Dogs separation anxiety can present a range of symptoms which can include:
- Vocalizing
- Pacing
- Shaking
- Destructive Behaviours
- Refusal to eat
- Inappropriate toileting
- Trying to escape
Dogs that have separation anxiety can display these behaviours either when left totally alone, if a dog has been rehomed, you have moved house or if their special person in the family has gone out, despite there being other family members in the house with the dog.

If you own a dog with separation anxiety, you must know what it can feel like and how frustrating and upsetting it can be.
You do not have the freedom to go out and make spontaneous plans as before. You can feel trapped in your own home. Even a quick trip to the supermarket cannot be achieved unless you have someone to be with your dog.
This is where I can help. Dog separation anxiety is treatable, but progress can sometimes seem slow, taking weeks and sometimes months to get your dog to a point where he is calm at being left for your desired period of time. This is because the condition is emotional and we are dealing with your dog's deep rooted fear of being left. This all takes time. I use desensitization techniques to help with the dog anxiety, so everything is done at the dog's pace, without him feeling stressed or panicked.

Reward your dog's good choices that they make throughout the day. The more you reward a behaviour, the more your dog will offer that behaviour.
With 35 years of dog training behind me, and growing up in a family who are passionate about working dogs, I look at any potential trainer with a very critical eye. I was fortunate enough to observe Chantal with her own dogs and it was no-brainer that she was the right person for my rescue Border Collie, Nina. Chantal has striven to gain as much knowledge as possible but she has what so many others do not; the ability to "see" the dogs at their essence. This is skill that cannot be taught but is rather intrinsic to the person. This insight is what made it so easy to work with, and respect, Chantal! Chantal, thank you for seeing Nina for the incredible little soul that she is, helping us explore her fears and giving me the tools to make her as happy as she can possibly be.
